Navigating the Academic Journey with Resilience

Meet Sean Prenter, a recent graduate from Otago University, armed with a Bachelor of Applied Science and currently pursuing his Masters in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics at Victoria University. However, Sean's journey goes beyond academic accomplishments; it's a testament to resilience and determination.

In 2019, Sean faced a traumatic brain injury (TBI), marking a significant turning point. His acquired disability necessitated engagement with psychological therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, forming the cornerstone of navigating his new life.

Despite challenges, Sean encountered sensory sensitivity and stimulus overload during lectures and on campus. Coping with neurogenic fatigue, cognitive overload, and mental health struggles, he found support crucial.

Sean found a beacon of light in Disability Information and Support (DI&S) and a Geography department staff member. Flexible assignments, proactive communication, and an adaptive attitude transformed his academic journey.

Access to study rooms, a locker for self-care items, extra time for exams, and a separate room for sitting exams were instrumental. DI&S ensured his academic performance truly reflected his ability.

My biggest challenges were sensory sensitivity and stimulus in lectures and on campus. Stimulus overload results in cognitive overload which brings on neurogenic fatigue where articulation, processing information and recalling information is more demanding.

Sean encourages proactive engagement with available support, open dialogue with lecturers, utilising student health support, and joining clubs and societies for social connections. He emphasises challenging self-care barriers while demanding accessibility, inclusion, and dignity.

Sean cherishes forming the Otago Disabled Student’s Association, completing his first paper while studying part-time, achieving an A-grade, and celebrating his community during graduation.

For those near the end of their studies, Sean suggests following your passion, building connections, seeking help, and offering help to others. Embrace the challenges of transitioning, recognising the success made in conquering each chapter of life.

Sean's journey is a source of inspiration, showcasing the power of resilience, adaptability, and the transformative impact of supportive communities.
